How to read the result

Three label questions that are easy to mix up

Fragrance, perfume, or parfum

FDA permits fragrance ingredients to appear under a collective declaration. A generic term does not reveal every substance inside that mixture.

Unscented

Unscented does not always mean no fragrance ingredients. FDA notes that a fragrance may be used to mask an ingredient's odor.

Fragrance-free

FDA says this term has no governing federal definition for cosmetics. Treat it as one label claim, then inspect the current declaration and ask about unclear terms.

Why the checker stays narrow

No essential-oil blacklist or safety score

An ingredient can serve more than one purpose, and individually named botanical or aromatic ingredients do not reliably announce why they were added. This tool does not guess intent from a plant name, rank ingredients, diagnose an allergy, or call a finished product suitable for everyone. A narrow result is more honest than a broad verdict the label cannot support.

After the label check

Test the finished product, not a word list

AAD suggests applying a new skin-care product to a quarter-sized test spot twice daily for 7 to 10 days, using the normal amount and thickness and following the label directions. Rinse off a wash-off product as directed. If a reaction develops, wash the product off and do not use it again. Seek professional help for a severe or persistent response.

This at-home product trial is not the same as patch testing performed by a dermatologist to investigate possible allergic contact dermatitis. Neither method turns the checker result into a diagnosis.
